The Call to Discipleship

Becoming a Christian is just the beginning of your faith adventure!

‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations …teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you’ Matthew 28:19, 20.

Jesus made it very clear that we must become His disciples; and to become a disciple is costly. But with a great price, comes a great reward!

Did you know that it is possible to believe everything, and yet still have nothing, unless you add action to your faith?

It’s time to put your faith into action! Are you tired of just going to church, reading your Bible, praying etc, and yet not really having a dynamic relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ?
You’re doing everything outwardly, yet in your heart, even though you believe - you’re not really REAL with God. You know you’re not in the centre of the will of God for your life – and deep down, you are thoroughly unsatisfied.

Did you know that God has a plan and purpose for your life?

'For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them' Ephesians 2:10.

A disciple is a person who commits their entire life to Jesus. They commit their future and everything they own to Him. A disciple lives only for the will of God and their burning desire is to obey the Lord.

Will I have to become a minister or missionary? No. All you have to do is be obedient to what God is asking you to do. Just be faithful in your place of work, school, college, university or at home. Most people serve God in their daily lives, but some are called to work in Christian ministry and you need to be prepared for His call if it comes.

Do you really want to pass through life without embracing the destiny and call that God has for you?

Jesus wants you to make a choice. Either you are going to play at being a Christian, believe everything and yet ignore His will for your life. Or you are going to come to the Lord, and surrender to the call that He has for you.

'I beseech you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God' Romans 12:1-2.

Will it be costly? Yes.

Will there be rewards? Yes.

Most people are afraid to surrender to the call of God, because they fear He will lead them to live a miserable life!

Some fear being led to a single life or being called to be a missionary in some malaria-ridden jungle for thirty years!

Will there be sacrifices to make? Yes! But the Bible says that God is good!

If He is good, then He has a good plan for your life. Think about the dreams and desires that are in your heart – many of them have been placed there by God. Think about the gifts that you have – they have come from God.

'For I know the plans that I have for you says the Lord, plans of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope' Jeremiah 29:11.

God is good and whatever He calls us to do, we shall receive the grace to be obedient, even if it may seem very hard at times. Many of those who were called to missionary work, find a deep peace in being in God’s will.

True fulfilment and satisfaction is only found in the perfect will of God for your life.

If you want to fully embrace your God-given destiny, to see your gifts and heart's desires embraced and to feel the fulfilment that comes from obedience – then accept the call of discipleship.

Accepting the call to Christian discipleship is not a one-off prayer we make, it is the life we live. Everyday we must choose to surrender ourselves to His purposes.

From that point on, Jesus Christ is the number one in our life. His plans for us, become our plans. His will supercedes our will. His desires become our desires. We go where He wants us to go and obey even when it is hard.

Go and seek the Lord today, tell Him your heart's desire and make it clear that you don’t want to be a lukewarm Christian anymore. Accept the challenge of becoming a disciple and begin your journey of radical discipleship following Christ Jesus!

Remember this…discipleship is not a course that we complete; it is the life we live! It is putting Jesus Christ first in your life and letting His will be your first priority.

If Jesus gave everything for us, is there anything that we should keep back from to Him?
